Welcome to the 5 Virtues Qigong web site. I am JMichael Wood, Director of the Middle Tennessee branch of the International Institute of Medical Qigong. In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), the 5 Virtues are Order, Trust, Integrity, Wisdom and Compassion. It is thought that the capacity for these Virtues is given to us at birth and housed in the five major organs – the heart, spleen, lungs, kidneys and liver. These Virtues can be obscured in these organs by toxic emotional energy brought on over time by emotional and/or physical trauma. The embodiment of these toxic emotions can result in disease by impeding the natural flow of life force energy, or Qi, in the body. The Chinese word Qigong (pronounced chee gong) means energy (or spirit) skill. My Qigong practice focuses on helping clients dissipate the energetic charge around emotional issues, thereby freeing the natural flow of life force energy, or Qi, in the body. This helps to promote optimal health in a person’s physical body and return them to the balanced emotional and mental state of the 5 Virtues. My specialization includes processes which have been found to be helpful in relieving symptoms of many stress-related disorders including Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, Anxiety, Obsession, Depression, Grief, Fear, and aiding recovery from many pathological diseases including cancer. I offer pre- and post-surgery techniques to relieve emotional trauma surrounding the surgery, speed post-op recovery and help reduce scar tissue. Please click the “Treatments” link at the top of the page for more information. My personal practice is based on my 40 years experience in energy work and breathwork. You can read my credentials by clicking “About JMichael Wood” at the top of this page. I also conduct workshops and classes on breathwork and Qigong in association with the International Institute of Medical Qigong. Click the “Classes” link at the top of this page to see schedules, pricing and course objectives. More on the 5 Virtues
In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), each of the five solid organs in the body (Yin Organs) contain the Spiritual and energetic properties which include the 5 Virtues. The Heart houses Order; the Spleen houses Trust; the Lungs contain Integrity; the Kidneys house Wisdom; and the Liver holds Compassion. However, each of these organs will embody toxic emotions triggered by physical and emotional trauma. The acquired toxic emotions are: Heart - anxiety, shock, unforgiveness and long term memory of emotional trauma; Spleen – worry, obsession, self worth issues; Lungs – grief, sorrow, shame, guilt despair; Kidneys – Fear, Loneliness; Liver – anger, jealousy, resentment, depression. The mechanics of proper breathwork are taught first, creating ease and flow of breath to provide maximum oxygen to the organs, calm the nervous system and create a healing state of mind. Mental imagery is used to override previous unbalanced breathing techniques and habituate proper breath and posture. The International Institute of Medical Qigong
